How a site gets built properly

A website that ranks, converts and stays maintainable is the product of decisions made in a specific order. Reordering them is what produces sites that look finished but perform badly.

  1. Scope, audience and success metric

    Before any design, we agree what the site is for — qualified enquiries, bookings, sign-ups — and what number proves it worked. A site without a defined conversion is decorated, not designed.

  2. Information architecture and content model

    Pages, URLs and navigation are mapped first, then the CMS is modelled around content types rather than page layouts. Modelling around layouts is what makes a CMS unusable the first time you need the same content in two places.

  3. Design system, not page mockups

    Type scale, spacing, colour tokens and reusable components are defined once so every page inherits them. This is what keeps a site visually coherent after twenty pages have been added by different people.

  4. Build with a deliberate rendering strategy

    Each route is chosen as static, server-rendered or incrementally regenerated based on how often its content changes and whether it must be crawlable. Rendering choice drives both search visibility and hosting cost, so it is decided per route rather than globally.

  5. Performance and accessibility budget

    Core Web Vitals targets and WCAG AA contrast, focus and heading-order rules are enforced during the build, not audited afterwards. Retrofitting either one is dramatically more expensive than building to it.

  6. Launch with redirects, schema and measurement

    Old URLs are mapped to new ones with permanent redirects, structured data and canonicals are verified, and analytics is confirmed firing before switchover. This is the step most often skipped, and the one that loses existing rankings.

The vocabulary that comes up in web projects, defined without jargon.

Core Web Vitals
Google’s three measured user-experience signals: LCP (how quickly the main content appears), INP (how quickly the page responds to interaction) and CLS (how much the layout shifts while loading).
SSR, SSG and ISR
Three ways to produce a page. Server-side rendering builds it per request, static generation builds it once at deploy, and incremental regeneration serves a static page that refreshes on a schedule. The choice trades freshness against speed and cost.
Hydration
The step where JavaScript attaches interactivity to already-rendered HTML. Heavy hydration is a common cause of a page that looks ready but does not respond to clicks yet.
Semantic HTML
Using elements for their meaning — headings, lists, buttons, landmarks — rather than styling generic containers. It is simultaneously the cheapest accessibility win and the clearest signal of page structure to search engines.
Canonical URL
A tag declaring the preferred address for a page when the same content is reachable at several URLs. It consolidates ranking signals instead of splitting them across duplicates.
Headless CMS
A content system that stores and serves content through an API without dictating how it is displayed, so the same content can feed a website, an app and a third-party channel.
Structured data
Machine-readable markup describing what a page represents — an organisation, an article, a FAQ, a product. It is how search engines and AI assistants extract facts rather than guessing from prose.
